There are different causes of this that all need to be checked.. The usual fault on these models when this happens is premature failure of the gear change selector cables - this is going to have to be checked first.. Also though, the connectors, where they connect to the transmission, sometimes the brackets twist causing this as the selectors

This has a system of electric motors and actuators attached to a manual gearbox that emulate the action of the driver. But they protect themselves by cushioning the gearchanges, so if you attempt to accelerate hard your progress will be in a series of lurches.

Undo and release the clutch cable from the transmission and stow it to one side. Unclip the reverse light switch and remove the bracket. Install the support beam and undo the upper bell housing bolts and the starter motor upper bolt. Remove the gearbox supporting bracket (pictured below). Raise the vehicle and remove the N/S/F wheel.
