The N57 also features a piezoelectric injector which is more delicate and prone to breakage, and at the same time is very expensive and non-regenerable. Overall the engine is still good, but not like the M57 anymore. The best variant of this BMW engine is the M57D30TΓ version with 218 HP power and 500 Nm of torque.
I ran an E90 330i for 4 years and about 55k miles. It was a 55 plate with an auto box running the N52 (258bhp) - that engine was rock solid and I never had a bad experience with it. I think the later 330i's, 07 onwards, came with the N53 putting out a little more power @ 272bhp IIRC - no experience with those though
My understanding is that the electric water pump can fail as the car approaches 100k, which can cost almost $1k. Also, some of the early 330i will experience excessive engine ticking, which requires head replacement. Aside from those two issues, these cars appear to be quite reliable.
